A roadster, which is now reduced to the essentials, is all about maximum performance. The bike now puts 160 bhp, 112 Nm torque and a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 1.29 kilograms per bhp. Just like its superbike predecessor, the new S 1000 R sets the benchmark in its segment. The high-performance 4-cylinder in-line engine derives from the RR and was optimised for use in the ‘Single R’. The result is an extremely linear torque delivery for constant forward propulsion across the entire engine speed range.

The new machine is available in three colours, white, racing red as well as black storm metallic. The standard equipment includes BMW Motorrad ABS and Automatic Stability Control. There are three riding modes – rain, road and sport. Now the new S 1000 R even comes with BMWs own HP slip-on titanium silencer and an LED rear light and indicators. The bike also has with cruise control, a gear assist pro quick shifter and a set of heated grips for those of us who use our bikes in the real world. To that end there’s a belly pan now fitted as standard which keeps the engine clean of road dirt.
